Organizations that support families in need, like Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), play a vital role. In 2016, RMHC provided 2.4 million overnight stays for families so they could remain near the hospitals where their children received treatment. Those stays allow families to spend time with their children, speak directly with care teams, and participate in important decisions about treatment and recovery.
Through Ronald McDonald Houses and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, RMHC offers comfortable, convenient places for families to stay within steps of the hospitals where their children are receiving care.
Teaching Children to Give Back
My children are fortunate, and I want them to recognize that. They have what they need and many of life’s challenges have been manageable for us. I want them to grow up compassionate and generous, aware of others who are struggling. One simple, effective way to teach this is by volunteering time or donating items to children’s charities like RMHC. Involving kids in the process helps them understand the value of giving.
Host a Toy Drive Fundraiser
A toy drive is an accessible way for kids to participate in giving. Letting children donate toys they’ve outgrown or no longer use creates a tangible lesson in generosity. They learn that something they once enjoyed can brighten another child’s day. For parents, it’s also a practical way to declutter and teach values at the same time.
Steps for Hosting a Toy Drive
- Get the word out. Announce your toy drive to friends, family, neighbors, and local groups. Use flyers, community boards, and social media to share your event and its purpose.
- Gather toys. Involve your children in selecting toys to donate. Items that are gently used, complete, and clean are ideal. With permission, set up a collection point at a school, place of worship, or community center.
- Sell or collect toys. You can sell the donated toys at a rummage sale, through local buy-and-sell groups, or by hosting an online event. Photograph items for online listings, set clear prices or run an auction, and arrange a safe pickup or delivery.
If a full-scale drive feels overwhelming, simplify the plan. Even a small effort—like selling a few of your own toys and donating the proceeds—teaches children about giving without a major time commitment. Consistency and follow-through are more important than scale.
