There’s nothing like elevating a classic brownie with a Macaroon Brownie Topping. This simple, crowd-pleasing addition uses easy-to-find ingredients and gives your brownies a delightful coconut-chocolate finish. The rich brownie base remains the star, while a coconut and chocolate chip topping adds flavor, texture, and visual appeal.

The Brownie
I usually bake brownies from scratch when time allows — it feels personal and satisfying to say, “I made this from scratch.” If you want to try the exact brownies shown here, use my Chewy Gooey Walnut Brownies as the base.
That said, boxed brownie mixes are a perfectly good shortcut and I use them often when life gets busy. They come in a variety of flavors, and a dark chocolate mix is especially delicious with this topping.

Making the Macaroon Brownie Topping
One of the things I love about this topping is how easy it is — everything mixes in one bowl, which means fewer dishes and less fuss. After you prepare your brownie batter and pour it into a greased 9 x 13 baking dish, reuse the same bowl for the topping.
Combine the macaron topping ingredients, then drop small teaspoons of the mixture evenly over the brownie batter. Bake the whole pan according to the brownie recipe you used, whether from a box or homemade.

Choosing your chocolate chips
Semi-sweet chips are my go-to, but feel free to experiment. White chocolate chips create a pretty contrast, and peanut butter chips would add a rich, nutty twist. In the photos I used mini semi-sweet chips for a delicate look, but regular or chopped chocolate pieces also work well.
If you want a bolder texture, use a chopped chocolate bar or rough-chopped chips. The topping is forgiving — mix and match chips and sizes for the result you prefer.
