A fresh twist on a childhood favorite. I grew up eating Sloppy Joes, but this Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes version might be my new favorite!
Yes, I combined two classic messy sandwiches into one gloriously sloppy, cheesy sandwich.

I’ve made Sloppy Joes for years—my mom made them often when I was growing up because they’re quick and simple. Recently my husband tried a Philly cheesesteak from a local shop, and it inspired this mash-up. These Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes are rich, cheesy, and satisfyingly saucy. I hope you love them as much as we do!
How to make Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes:
Brown the ground beef in a skillet, then add diced green pepper and onion and cook until softened. Stir in the sauce ingredients and simmer until slightly thickened. Reduce the heat, fold in chopped provolone until melted, and serve the mixture warm on hamburger buns.
Ingredient Notes:
- Oil
- Ground beef
- Onion, diced
- Green pepper, diced
- Ketchup
- Worcestershire sauce
- Salt & pepper
- Beef broth
- Cornstarch
- Provolone cheese, chopped
- Hamburger buns
Directions:
Step One – Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Add the diced onion and green pepper and cook until they are tender.

Step Two – Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, beef broth, and cornstarch. Cook and stir until the mixture is slightly thickened and well combined.

Step Three – Reduce the heat to low and add the chopped provolone. Stir until the cheese melts into the sauce. Spoon the cheesy, saucy mixture onto buns and serve immediately.

Can I make Sloppy Joes ahead of time?
Yes. Sloppy Joes keep well in the refrigerator. Once cooled, store them in an airtight container for up to 7 days.

How do I reheat Sloppy Joes?
Reheat on the stovetop in a skillet over medium heat. Add a splash of beef broth to loosen the sauce and restore the silky consistency. If you don’t have beef broth, a little tomato sauce works in a pinch but will alter the flavor.

Can you freeze Sloppy Joes?
Yes. Let the cooked mixture cool completely, then transfer to a freezer-safe airtight container. They keep for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator and reheat using the stovetop method above.
