Ingredients

Ingredients: green candy, hard pretzels, orange chocolate.

Pretzels: small, hard, crunchy pretzels (not the soft baked kind). Salted pretzels work well—the salt balances the sweetness.

Orange chocolate or candy melts: the easiest option since they’re already the right color. If you can’t find orange melts, melt white candy coating and tint with oil-based orange food coloring.

Green chocolate-coated candy: such as green M&Ms, to form the pumpkin stem.

Optional: refined (expeller-pressed) coconut oil. A small amount helps thin candy melts to a smoother, more dip-friendly consistency without adding coconut flavor.

How to make pumpkin pretzels

See the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and timings.

Line baking trays with parchment paper. Melt the orange chocolate or candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl in short bursts, stirring between bursts until smooth. Alternatively, use a double boiler—avoid getting water into the chocolate to prevent seizing.

Process shots: dropping pretzels into melted chocolate, pushing down with skewer, fishing out with skewer.

Working quickly, dip each pretzel into the melted orange coating. A metal skewer or fork helps move and fully coat the pretzels, then lift them out and let excess coating drip off. Hold the edge of the pretzel while shaking off excess before placing it on the prepared parchment.

Process shots: laying coated pretzel onto baking paper, fixing gap with a dab of melted chocolate, adding green candy, a tray of hardening pretzels.

Press a green candy onto the top of each coated pretzel to create the pumpkin stem. Make sure the candy touches the coating so it adheres. If the coating has a small gap where you held the pretzel, use a tiny dab of melted chocolate to fill it in.

Repeat until all pretzels are coated and stems added. Allow the pretzels to set at room temperature or in the fridge until the coating is fully firm, then carefully peel them off the parchment.

Arrange the pumpkin pretzels on a platter, tiered tray or dessert table. They’re ideal as a sweet snack alongside other desserts, or as a fun, hand-held treat for kids and guests.

How to store

Store pumpkin pretzels in a lined, airtight container for up to three days. They will remain safe to eat after that but the pretzels may lose some crunch.

Recipe tips and frequently asked questions

My chocolate or candy melts are too thick

Add a small amount of refined coconut oil (a teaspoon at a time) to thin the coating to a smoother, more dip-friendly consistency.

My green candy stems keep falling over

If the coating is warm or too thin the stems may slide. Let the coating firm for a minute or two after laying out a few pretzels, then press the stems in. Working in small batches helps.

The chocolate developed a crackly or spotty finish

This is likely chocolate “bloom,” where fats or sugars shift and change the appearance. It’s safe to eat and can look decorative. If desired, gently brush with a clean, food-safe brush before serving.
