I finally combined two of my current favorites—root beer and protein—into one indulgent but simple shake. It really does taste like a root beer float while giving you a solid protein boost.

Mixing a flavored drink mix with vanilla protein powder opens up countless flavor possibilities. I’ve been experimenting a lot since quitting diet soda and stocking up on drink mixes and low-calorie syrups. A soda maker is another fun tool if you want to play with carbonation in other drinks, but for this shake we keep it simple.

Ingredients in the root beer float protein shake

  • Vanilla protein powder — I often use a plain vanilla whey powder for a lower-carb option (roughly 20–21 g protein per scoop). You can use any vanilla protein you prefer, just note the calories and macros may vary.
  • A&W root beer drink mix packet — available at most grocery stores and supermarkets.
  • Vanilla unsweetened almond milk — about 30 calories per half cup. Water also works if you prefer.

You’ll also need ice (I use 5–6 large cubes) to thicken the shake and give it that root beer float texture. If you like, top the finished shake with a small amount of whipped cream for a classic float finish.
